Summer Tides

The first day of summer break turns a friendly game of basketball for four friends into a deadly night that leaves one's heart on the court.

Director's Statement

After losing numerous friends to the unprotected streets of Philadelphia, I wanted to draw attention to an ongoing issue of youth violence as the effects begin to affect children younger and younger. I created Summer Tides to not only address the gun violence in the city of Philadelphia but the mental welfare it has on the youth and how it is difficult to cope with losing so many people so young.

FILM Statement

Summer Tides follows four friends during the first day of summer break. We begin the story showing the desensitized minds of the children that live in a neighborhood that involves dealing with violence, drugs, and the poverty that takes place around them. We later evolve by showing that the children do not know how to cope with these issues so instead they joke and laugh. This numbness has caused lack concern or wellbeing for the world around them. To them it is just another day in the neighborhood.

Summer Tides is a short filmed inspired by true events. We follow 4 adolescents at a inner city recreational center during their first day of summer break which turns out to be a nightmare after gunshots interrupt a game of basketball, their outlook on the world will forever be changed. This short film conveys similar urban themes such as Menace to society, Boyz n the hood and Don’t be a menace to south central.
